*2017 Silton vs. Cancer final contributions to The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation: $13,000!
For many summers, during the 90’s and early 2000’s, The Silton Swim Team has participated in the American Cancer Society's Swim Marathon. This event raised cancer awareness and money towards cancer research and local families. In 2006, Coach Danielle and her husband, Philip, lost their dear friend, Douglas Rillo, to brain cancer. Doug was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2005 while attending Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Doug fought an amazing battle for a year but lost his fight on September 21, 2006. Doug was 21 years old. In 2007, the Silton Swim Team continued the ACS Swim Marathon tradition and established Silton vs. Cancer in honor of Douglas Rillo. Beginning in 2016, Silton vs. Cancer has partnered with The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation in Wall Township, New Jersey. Proceeds from our event are donated to local families throughout Monmouth County, New Jersey.
The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation
The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that has been providing services to families in New Jersey for over 25 years. The distinctive feature of the ECF’s program is the tailored package of support provided at no cost to the family. The foundation is a tax-exempt 501-C-3 organization privately funded by the contributions of individuals, corporations, foundations and community groups. The ECF provides a variety of specialty services, at no charge, to any New Jersey family facing the challenges of caring for a child with cancer. ECF provides the following services: Professional in-home counseling, advocacy on behalf of the families, material support such as food, clothing, toys, and household items, and financial relief.
Since 2007, we have added some very important people to our Silton vs. Cancer fundraiser. We swim in memory of the following people who were very close to our Silton Family: Douglas Rillo (New Providence NJ), Dr. E. David Morgan (Manasquan NJ), Don Corson Jr. (Wall NJ), Kevin Leete (Harwich, MA), Betty Ann Moore (Kearney, NJ), Coach Carl Mayo (Neptune NJ), Coach John Amabile (Spring Lake Heights NJ), Thomas O'Neill (Berkely Heights NJ), Nancy Grahill (Asbury Park NJ), Annamary Smith Larkin (Belmar NJ), Ann Carpenter (Wall NJ), Frances M. McCarthy (Sea Girt NJ), Allie Hopper (Brick NJ) , George Panasuk (Wall NJ), Peter Nestler (Summit, NJ), Harvey Meldrum (Manasquan, NJ), Charles Newbury (Manasquan, NJ) and Thomas Capestro (Brick, NJ).
HOW IS MONEY RAISED DURING OUR EVENT? Swimmers will swim as many laps as possible during our three hour event and keep track of the amount of lengths swum. Depending on their total number of lengths completed, swimmers will receive donations from sponsors. Sponsors may donate money per lap or give flat donations of any monetary amount. Laps completed at practice the week of the event will also count towards swimmer's total lengths completed. We also hold a gift raffle during our event. We have over 75 prizes to raffle off each year.
Each summer, Casertano Cucina caters our event. Please check their website out at www.casertanosdeli.com!
In previous years, the Silton Swim Team has raised up to $25,000 annually during our Silton vs. Cancer event! As always, we appreciate the generosity the swimmers and parents have shown over the years, and we are especially grateful for all of the individuals and organizations who have donated raffle prizes.
This year's proceeds will benefit a local charity the "Emmanuel Cancer Foundation" of Wall Township, NJ. Please make all checks payable to "Emmanuel Cancer Foundation".
Swimmers are encouraged to make posters recognizing family members or friends who have fought against this horrible disease. Posters will be judged and 3 winners will be awarded prizes at the end of the event!
